The Giovanni Consort commences their 2019 Season with Cenere. An octet of singers will perform works by Carlo Gesualdo and Claudio Monteverdi in the Stile Antico (old style); without a conductor.
The Giovanni Consort are delighted to welcome Brianna Louwen to lead the ensemble, fresh from a Masters Degree in Solo Voice Ensemble Singing at the University of York. Brianna studied under Robert Hollingworth, one of the finest exponents of consort practice throughout the world. Cenere is the Italian for ‘Ashes’, and was the name of Brianna’s quintet during her Masters – named so for their three English and two Australian members. The concert is named thus for the juxtaposition of death and life that Ashes represent, which will be reflected in the varied program.
Cenere’s major work will be Gesualdo’s Tenebrae Responsories with some light-hearted Monteverdi taking us into the evening. The Giovanni Consort will be joined at St George’s College by some of WA’s premier artists, providing an exciting visual component to this concert.
